What’s Considered A Classic Car?
Classic cars come in all shapes and sizes, from a two-door convertible all the way up to a decked-out VW bus. While it’s difficult to specifically define a classic car, for registration and insurance purposes, the age in a majority of cases is at least 20 years old, though this can vary. To register and insure the vehicle as a classic car under King Risk Partners, the car should have its original specifications, meaning any restoration on the vehicle must match how it was originally created, down to the tiniest detail. For example, a Ford Mustang from the ‘80s can’t have a state-of-the-art and modern stereo system to be considered a classic.
Do I Need Classic Car Insurance?
Forty-seven states require car insurance of some kind, so the answer is most likely yes. If you don’t have insurance, it could result in heavy fines or jail time and suspension/revocation of your license. The minimum required coverage is liability insurance to cover damage and injuries the car may cause, but some states require additional coverage, such as comprehensive and collision. Our insurance agents can inform you of the classic car insurance requirements for where you live.
Am I Eligible For Coverage?
The most important requirement for classic car insurance coverage is that the car must not be used as the primary driving vehicle, meaning that if it’s used to drive to work, to school, to shops, or other places, it will not be eligible. Additionally, many insurance providers will not cover unless the owner(s):
- Are 25 or older
- Own and use another car as the primary driving vehicle
- Have a great driving record and 5–10 years of solid driving experience
- Keep the vehicle safe in a fully enclosed garage, storage facility, carport, or other approved place
- Agree not to race the car or drive it on a track
- Live in a certain area or state (may only apply to some states)
- Ensure the collectible is in good shape and intended for driving
- Have only one at-fault accident on their record within the past three years
Classic Car Insurance Coverage Options
Liability insurance is the basic type of classic car insurance policy and is required in most states. There are additional coverage options available, such as collision and comprehensive in addition to unique coverage options just for classic cars. Our insurance company provides liability coverage as well as many other policy options to fit every type of car, budget or requirement.
Bodily Harm & Property Damage Liability Coverage
Liability insurance for classic cars is a specialty of King Risk Partners, which is mandatory in most U.S. states. In the event of an accident involving a classic car when the driver is at fault, liability insurance compensates the affected motorist(s) for all expenses from the accident. Bodily harm insurance covers any injuries to the other motorist(s) or their passengers, and property damage insurance pays for destruction to nearby property, such as signs, sidewalks, parked cars, fire hydrants and more. If the classic car driver is sued, legal expenses are also covered.
Collision & Comprehensive Coverage
Collision coverage and comprehensive coverage pay for damage to the classic car or cover the cost if the car is stolen or totaled. Even though your classic car isn’t the primary means of transportation, it’s important to have it covered to give you peace of mind when you are driving it on the road. Collision insurance allows a driver to file a claim and get reimbursed regardless of who’s at fault. Most accidents fall under this type of policy. Sometimes things are out of our control — this is where comprehensive insurance comes in. For example, if a tree falls on the garage where a priceless 1987 Ford Mustang is stored, the owner can be reimbursed.
No Attendance Required Coverage
With all the work put into restoring and caring for a collector car, it’s only natural to want to show it off at an exhibition. No attendance required coverage insures your ride is protected while it’s being displayed at a car show. The car doesn’t have to be in your possession at the time in order for this coverage to apply. For instance, if a dealership wants to use the car for a promotion, any damages or injuries caused would be covered.
